Celebrating Women

National Women’s Day is a South African public holiday celebrated annually on 9th August. The day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country’s pass laws that required black South Africans to carry an internal passport, known as a pass wherever they went.

National Women’s Day pays homage to the women of our nation who fought against the Apartheid government, it draws attention to significant issues South African women still face, such as parenting, domestic violence, sexual harassment in the workplace and unequal pay. It can be used as a day to fight for or protest these ideas. “Wathint’ Abafazi Wathint’ imbokodo!” (you strike a woman, you strike a rock) is a phrase that has come to represent women’s strength and courage.

To date women are still faced with a lot of challenges, but they are still breaking boundaries and fighting harder than ever to change the narrative. Women today are occupying high positions in society and becoming leaders in boardrooms, positions that were once for men only. Eskilz is celebrating Women’s month this August by hosting a Business Women’s Lunch, invitation is open to all business women. This will be a day to celebrate each other as women and share success stories and challenges that we still face.
